Our books talk about the India of brotherhood and unity- the secular India, an India where everyone is equal- irrespective of their gender, the democratic India where all of us have right to say what we want, live the way we want.
But these are only written rules which are never applied. India is actually a country where let alone equality, women are not even treated as human beings. They are not given the respect they deserve as a human being.
Actually, India is the country of Nirbhaya. A country where a girl can not have a male friend, cannot go out and enjoy at night or at anytime of the day for that matter. And if she does, she is considered to be characterless who needs to be taught a lesson and hence is raped.
It is the country of women like Bhanwari Devi, who if tries to fight the social evils existing in the society and end up risking their lives, losing exclusive rights to their bodies.
It is not a country where daughters are worshiped as goddesses on earth, but it is a bottomless pit where a 28 day old baby girl, who has just stepped into this world, is made familiar with the horrific truths about the plight of women.
India is not a country where a girl is loved by her family members, where she is considered to be a blessing but a place where a sister is raped by her brother and a daughter by her father.
India is not a country where a milestone is achieved every five to ten years but it is a country where a woman is raped every fifteen minutes.
India
is a place where it seems difficult to see a girl?s dream come true, but it?s
easy to see all her ghostly nightmares come true.
